What Positive Affirmations Are and How They Work

As part of the human experience, we have such multilayered complex structures of thought. Our human brain has the capacity to think, feel, and respond in more ways than one can imagine. In fact, research shows our brains are so powerful that they even absorb energy and hold all forms of communication we experience in which our unconscious stores and relies on to respond to our environments later on.

How do you communicate to yourself? Are you cheering yourself on? Or, are you selling yourself short and telling yourself you can’t do something. Are you telling yourself you’re unqualified to handle a job role you so deeply desire? Be careful what you are saying! Your unconscious is absorbing it all and is directing your next steps.

One way to rewire and train your brain to focus on the positive is through positive affirmations.

What are affirmations?

Affirmations are a string of words spoken to declare truths. They provide emotional support and are best absorbed by our brains when we use them in the present tense.

For example, instead of saying I am going to obtain more skillsets to have the job of my dreams, you will say- I am skilled for any position my heart seeks out. By doing this, you are speaking truths to yourself and raising your frequency to operate at a higher level. You are giving yourself permission and telling yourself YES! You are proclaiming it and telling yourself you already have it. Therefore, your actions will walk alongside this new proclaimed energy/ affirmations your desires are yours for the taking!

But Anna, you can’t possibly mean that our thoughts are literally energy provoking, do you? Oh darling, but I do! The power of positive thinking has a basis in physics. Since everything is energy and everything has a specific vibration– because let's be real, likes attract likes – the quality of your thoughts can’t help but attract situations with similar vibrations.

How Do They Work?

Well according to Dr. Carmen Harra, affirmations do indeed strengthen us by helping us believe in the potential of an action we desire to manifest. We need to reprogram our thoughts to think things into fruition. Because the mind cannot decipher what is real and not, you have to decide what you want to be real.

Think of the last time you cried while watching a movie. Your brain translated the movie into something heartfelt and you experienced a real reaction even though the character and their journey were not real. Hollywood magic will do that to you and so will your thoughts.

By repeating your affirmation allowed to yourself, you are literally rewiring the structure of your brain. You are re-programing your unconscious to work for you and not against you. Your mind already believes the words you are feeding it, so make sure you choose your fuel wisely.
